Thunder Launch Title Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the decisive baskets deep into double overtime as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the Houston Rockets.

Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a positive start.

Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a personal-best five shots from beyond the arc.

But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points, was instrumental together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Grit and defence," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, missed attempts, fortune or bad luck. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."

Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's championship banner was unveiled at their home court, while the players were awarded their title rings.

Oklahoma City beat the Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.

Indiana will have the opportunity to secure some early revenge on Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Houston are back on court on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from the Slovenian star was not enough to prevent his new team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.

Miami's star scored 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 for the road team.

The Lakers were missing the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from a back issue.
