Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
