RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
