A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
